BLOOD URIC ACID (BUA)

METHODOLOGY:

  • Phosphotungstate Method
  • Colorimetry

PURPOSE:

  • Used to detect high levels of uric acid in the blood which could be a sign of renal and metabolic disorders
  • Used to monitor uric acid levels when undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment
  • Used to diagnose the cause of kidney stones and those who are at risk of developing such stones.

 

PATIENT PREPARATION:

  • No preparation needed but some physicians may recommend fasting.

TYPE OF SPECIMEN:

  • 2-3 mL of serum (red top)

REJECTION OF SPECIMEN:

  • Hemolyzed specimen
  • Improperly labeled tube

 

RUNNING DAY:

  • Everyday

 

SPECIMEN STABILITY:

  • ROOM TEMPERATURE (20-24°C)

 

  • REFRIGERATED TEMPERATURE (2-8°C)

 

  • 3 days

 

  • 5 days

RELEASING OF RESULTS:

  • 2-3 hours after blood extraction
