ORAL GLUCOSE CHALLENGE TEST (OGCT)

LABORATORY SECTION:

  • Clinical Chemistry

METHODOLOGY:

  • Glucose Oxidase
  • Colorimetric

PURPOSE:

If pregnant:

  • Used to determine whether a pregnant patient is developing gestational diabetes

If non-pregnant:

  • Used to support or rule out a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus or when fasting blood sugar is significantly elevated.

 

PATIENT PREPARATION:

  • No patient preparation needed

TYPE OF SPECIMEN:

  • 2-3 mL of serum (red top)

REJECTION OF SPECIMEN:

  • Hemolyzed specimen
  • Improperly labeled specimen
  • QNS (quantity not sufficient)

 

RUNNING DAY:

  • Everyday

 

SPECIMEN STABILITY:

  • ROOM TEMPERATURE (20-24°C)

 

  • REFRIGERATED TEMPERATURE (2-8°C)

 

  • 5 days

 

  • 7 days

RELEASING OF RESULTS:

  • 2-3 hours after blood extraction
